Write a story and hear it back with the audiobook generator

Most of an AI audiobook generator's job is having something worth listening to. Type one line and this writes a complete short story, then reads it out loud to you on the spot. No file to upload, no account, no install.

Type an idea, get a story, and press listen. Free, no sign-up.

One line in, a story you can play

You type: A night bus driver on the last route of the evening

Marcus took the 11:47 out of the depot the way he'd done for nineteen years, headlights cutting through the empty avenue like a slow-moving lighthouse.

Only three riders tonight. An old man in a wool coat who nodded off before the second stop. A woman in scrubs staring at nothing, the hospital still on her hands.

He knew the rhythms of the last bus. People rode it when they had nowhere else to be, or everywhere else to be and no other way to get there.

At the depot stop, the woman in scrubs paused by the door. "Thank you," she said, like she meant it for more than the ride.

Back at the depot, he cut the engine and sat a moment in the quiet, the bus cooling and creaking around him like something breathing out.

What makes a story work out loud

A story read aloud lives or dies on rhythm. Long clauses that scan fine on a page turn into a held breath in the ear, and dialogue without a beat around it blurs into the narration. The pieces that carry best are short sentences mixed with longer ones, names you can say without stumbling, and a turn late enough that a listener who drifted off comes back for it. Write it to be heard and it usually reads better on paper too.

  • A lighthouse keeper who has stopped believing in the sea
  • Two kids and one very slow escape from a museum
  • A woman who inherits a house that hums at nine every night
  • The last bus of the night, and the passenger who never gets off

Listen to it right now, in the browser

Press listen and the story is narrated where it sits, using the voices your own device already has. Nothing uploads, nothing installs, and there is no queue — the free audiobook generator starts talking the moment you ask it to. Voices differ a little between phones and laptops, because they come from the operating system rather than from us. Full studio-grade narration you can download as a file is what we are building next; this is the part that works today, free, for anyone.

An audiobook maker for stories you actually own

Most audiobook makers start from a manuscript you already finished, which is fine if you have one. This starts a step earlier: it writes the thing and then reads it, so a blank evening can end with something you can play. Everything it makes is yours to keep, edit and build on. When a short piece turns into something bigger, the short story generator drafts longer complete pieces and hellowriter grows any of them into a full illustrated book, chapter by chapter.

Bedtime stories you can press play on

The most common reason people want AI narration is the eight o'clock problem: the story is ready, the voice is gone. Write one with your kid in the afternoon, then let it read itself at night. Everything here stays family-safe, so nothing arrives that you would have to preview first. The bedtime story generator is tuned for gentle, sleepy stories that end softly rather than on a cliffhanger, which is what you want at that hour.

  • A dragon who is scared of the dark, and the lamp that helps
  • The moon takes one night off and asks a child to fill in
  • A cat who walks the same fence every night, checking on the street
  • Two socks who get separated in the wash and find their way back
FAQ

Audiobook, questions answered

What is an AI audiobook generator?

An AI audiobook generator turns written text into narrated audio you can listen to instead of read. This one goes a step further back: it writes the story first, from a single line you type, then reads that story aloud in your browser.

Is the audiobook generator free?

Yes, and there is no sign-up. Writing the story is free, listening to it is free, and you can do both as many times as you like. An account only matters when you want to save what you made and grow it into a longer illustrated book.

Can I turn my own story into audio?

Write it here and yes. The narration reads the story sitting on the page, so anything you generate can be played back immediately. Reading a manuscript you wrote somewhere else is part of the fuller narration we are building; today the tool writes and reads in one go.

Can I download the audio file?

Not from this free tool. Browser narration plays out loud but does not hand you a file, which is an honest limit of doing it without a server. Downloadable narration is what the paid version is being built around, alongside the existing epub, docx and PDF exports.

Which voice does it use?

It uses the voices already installed on your device, so a Mac, an iPhone and a Windows laptop will each sound a little different. That is also why it costs nothing and starts instantly. If your device offers several English voices, the tool picks the most natural-sounding one it can find.

How is this different from a text-to-speech tool?

A text-to-speech tool needs you to bring the text. This writes it. If you already have a finished manuscript and only need it voiced, a dedicated text-to-speech service is the better fit; if you have an idea and want something to listen to in the next minute, start here.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It runs entirely in the browser, so it works the same on a phone as on a laptop with nothing to install. That makes it usable in the places people actually listen to stories: a kitchen, a car seat, the edge of a bed at bedtime.

A short piece is the taster. Hellowriter writes and illustrates a full story chapter by chapter, and your first page costs nothing.
